The Passer-by is a collection of poems which versifies the experience of urban life through snapshots of both the poet’s psyche and the lives of peculiar Londoners. The author presents aspects of his identity and his experience through characters such as The Gas man, The Policewoman, The Spy or The Flower Lady who carry the projections of his own fears and desires. He also employs London as poetical material to inspire a jaunt across a modern metropolis which is full of traumas, tragedies, aspirations and laurel wreaths.

What is the role of the poet in a dehumanised and consumerist capital? Will the city, like the mythological Kraken, swallow the voice and artistic aspirations of the non-establishment poet? What is the relationship between time and language for the underground writer in underground London? These are some of the questions dealt with in this book of poetry reminiscent of “Spoon River Anthology” by the great American poet Edgar Lee Masters, where an imaginary town with its imaginary inhabitants allegorise the burdens and tribulations of the early twentieth century North American psyche.  

In this first edition, Gibraltarian poet Gabriel Moreno presents us with a Spanish translation of his poems originally written in English. The translation was carefully crafted by the bilingual author with the help of three Spanish poets and one Spanish novelist; Maria Hernandez, Enrique Zatarra, Pablo Yupton and Manuel Perez Subirana.
